So I have been looking at wheels again. And then I found out I’ll need to get coilovers to prevent rub on the struts. Then I found out I’ll need camber bolts and LCAs for the rear to get a proper alignment.
Oh god. This is how it starts doesn’t it? This is where we all fall into the deep end of the modding isn’t it? Is there an end?

or you can find wheels that fit.

What wheels are you looking at getting, and what specs?
Unless you’re going really big you shouldn’t have too much worry about rubbing.

You’ll be fine as long as you don’t go full stancebro.
(I have wide-ass wheels and tires plus all kinds of suspension crap on my car. Do what I say, not what I do.)

They do fit. The suspension is more to allow for extra room to give more of a gap.

RPF1 17x9 +35. They theoretically do fit on stock everything. I would just rather give it a few more inches of gap considering they’re really close to the strut.

Yeah I’m going for a sensible setup that isn’t slammed. The bolts and LCAs are to get a correct non-stancebro alignment.

Oh yes. Now you’re talking. Although the rear could do with a few degrees less negative camber.

Ah, you’ll be fine. If you’re getting coilovers, get them for actual handling improvement, not just to fit wider wheels.
I still won’t discourage more mods, just do them for the right reasons. ;)

I’m sure it isn’t as close to the strut as they are on F56 Minis.
That’s stock wheels and shocks. You have to use spacers if you want coilovers, even with stock wheels. And that photo is taken from behind the wheel, its closer than it looks.

find a lower offset.
i mean if youre tongue in cheek pointing out ‘reasons’ to buy mods, go ahead (I’m currently saving for an intake and tune on the cruze because I got an upgraded clutch). but if you’re being sincere, finding a better offset is a much better plan than rebuilding the suspension.

My buddy those exact wheels on his BRZ, and it was on coilovers (setup for autox), no issues.

just get wheels that fit without all of that.

How much wider of a wheel are you looking at that you need coilovers just to not rub on the struts?
I have camber plates in front to get the alignment where I want. Rear is adjustable enough from the factory. I also have adjustable sway bar endlinks front & rear.
My non-stancebroness (rears are 19x9.5" with 275/30-19 tires):

They’re 2-inches wider. My thing is I also want to lower the car and the extra clearance is also a justification. The BRZ should handle the new wheels just fine.

Part of it is just an excuse to lower the car to be fair. The wheels will fit with stock bits based on ft86club.

Yeah. That’s what I’ve heard too about the wheels fitting. I’m also just curious to know how the ST coilovers are able to be more comfortable than the stock suspension.

Comfort is largely a subjective matter. A stiffer sprung coilover can be more “comfortable” if it has proper valving. My SACHS coilovers were generally a more comfortable ride, thanks to great valving and progressive rear springs, but were more jarring over larger bumps/pot holes. That’s generally how it is with a lot of decent coilovers. If you’re going for “budget” coilovers, which I generally wouldn’t recommend, the STs are one of your best bets. Fourvalleys had them on his BRZ and they stood the test of time pretty well.
I will always recommend saving more to not compromise on suspension, but if you absolutely must buy a “cheap” coilover look at ST, Tien Flex Z, RCE Tarmac0, Bilstein B14, and KW V1. All of those are good, pretty much the only good, options in the $1,000-1,500 range. But, you can also get KW V3s or Bilstein B16s for ~$500-600 more and they’d be well worth the extra money.

Definitely agree on the not cheaping out on suspension. You make a good point on the V3 kit though. Adding in the LCAs would make up about half the difference and the top hats included with the V3 would allow for camber adjustments. That and the extra adjustability would be great for keeping it streetable as well as a proper track tool when the spring/summer comes.
Do you mind if I ask what suspension you’re running? I know you auto-x your twin a lot and it’s also your daily. I’m looking to eventually have the car see occasional track duty as well as keeping it comfortable enough to daily.

I had SACHS RS1 coilovers, which are priced around the same as V3s, B16s, and R&Ts. I’d say they’re probably most comparable to the B16s, since both are single adjustable dampers that utilize progressive spring rates (the SACHS in the rear, and Bilsteins in both front and rear). They’re a little softly sprung, by most people’s standards, but the valving is very good and they performed pretty well at autox, a few track days and daily driving.
What’s kind of interesting is that both KW and Ohlins recently reduced the spring rates on the V3 and R&T to be closer to the somewhat softer rates of the SACHS and Bilsteins. If you’re mainly going to be doing DD and autox, I think any of those four are good options.
I actually just removed my coilovers and am going back to a street class prep for autox. So I’ll likely be running TRD springs paired with Koni Yellows, Bilstein B6s, or Cusco Touring As. I’d love a set of Motons, but I’m not dropping that kinda money. haha

Very interesting. I just googled the Sachs coilovers and stumbled on your review on ft86. I guess not many people have them here in the US. I’m tempted by the Bilsteins as well. My girlfriend isn’t a fan of the bumpy nature of the stock suspension. Based on the reviews the Bilsteins will smooth out the bumpiness while also retaining some stiffness to improve cornering.

The SACHS will do pretty much the same, much comfier ride on regular roads and just a little more jarring over larger bumps (but that’ll be anything with stiffer springs). I noticed significantly flatter cornering with them on, and the adjustment range is quite noticeable when you start bumping the stiffness up/down.
And yeah I’m pretty sure I’m the only person with them in the US. haha
They’re actually for sale btw I’ve got one guy in Colorado interested, but not committed. If I can get clarification that he doesn’t want them, we could certainly talk. ;)

I’ve put around 10k miles on them, including two track days and two autocrosses.
One is leaking a bit of oil right now (thanks to a real bad pothole I didn’t see while driving at night), but I’m actually mailing it back to our Race Engineering department, to be either rebuilt or replaced, today. All the others are in great working condition, and I can even provide some shock dynos of them that we took the other day at my office. I’ll also be able to provide the contact info for our suspension engineer at ZF Race Engineering North America if you’ll have any further questions or anything.
Retail on them is $2,512, I was figuring on selling them for $2,000 shipped.
You can find me on FB if you wanna message me about it. My name on there is Chris Fairbanks, and you’ll see my car as my cover photo lol
